Why we inhabit old houses again
To restore is not to freeze. The houses on this route are not museums: they are living houses, and that is how they are saved.
A casona that was a cantina and stood empty for thirty years. A henequen field the wild had reclaimed. Eleven 18th-century houses behind a wall. Three different starting points, one conviction: heritage is saved by inhabiting it.
That is why in these houses lime is still lime, stone is still stone, and the crafts that raised them still work in them: the potter, the bejuco weaver, the town's carpenters, the city's stonemasons. To restore, here, was not to turn the houses into showcases: it was to give them back their oldest function, that of receiving.
The traveler who sleeps in them does not visit heritage. They sustain it. Every stay pays crafts, tends walls and keeps alive a way of building that would otherwise fade. That is the quiet economy of this route, and its reason for being.
