Casonas MX

“The quiet privilege of inhabiting.”

Campeche’s history, from the intimacy of a house.

A corridor of stone arches in the courtyard of one of the Casonas MX casonas, with a checkerboard floor, plants and lanterns.

The walled city

Campeche built its wall in the late 17th century to defend itself against pirates. Inside remain the colonial street grid, the flat-fronted houses painted in the historic palette and the bastions that protected it. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1999. It is a quiet Gulf city, best understood by sleeping inside its walls.

The house

Casonas MX is a hotel of houses: nine restored 18th-century casonas (large traditional houses) inside the city walls, each booked in its entirety, with hotel service and a single local team. Every house has a House Manager who knows it by heart.

The restorations follow the company’s own manifesto: change as little as possible, use breathable materials such as lime and chukum (a traditional Yucatecan plaster), and work with INAH, Mexico’s national heritage institute, on every intervention.

The people

Irma, from Campeche, and Sébastien, from France, have made Campeche their home for more than twenty years. In love with its colonial architecture and with interior design, they built their life inside the city walls. In 2020 they opened their first loft to travelers: that was the beginning of Narrativ and, over the years, of Casonas MX. Today the collection brings together nine heritage casonas where they share their way of living in Campeche, with the attentive care of a small local team.

What to do from here

  • Peninsula cooking at the house’s table, from pan de cazón (layered tortillas with fish) to papadzules (tortillas with pumpkin-seed sauce and egg).
